Vascular surgery

Vascular surgery is a surgical specialty concerned with the blood vessels, arteries and veins, with the exception of the intracranial vessels and coronary arteries. Arterial surgery treats acute (acute ischaemia of the limbs) and chronic arterial occlusion (arterial occlusive diseases) as well as arterial aneurysms.

Depending on the findings, the surgeon carries out a conventional procedure (involving opening the affected vessel) or uses vascular repair techniques (introduction of instruments such as balloons or springs inside the vessel to expand its diameter without opening the vessel wall). In most cases the carotid (neck) arteries, the abdominal aorta or the thigh or pelvic arteries are involved.

Venous surgery is concerned with the treatment of venous insufficiency, as occurs in the case of varicose veins.
