Diabetes is a speciality concerned with the (early) detection, treatment and prevention of complications in diabetes. An increased glucose concentration (“sugar”) in the blood is characteristic of this disease; it occurs when the body is unable to use or produce insulin. Complications of varying degree of severity can affect the heart, blood vessels, kidneys, eyes and/or nervous system, among others. Insulin is one of the body‘s own hormones that is produced in the pancreas and allows cells to absorb sugar. The main causes of diabetes are hereditary predispositions associated with various lifestyle factors such as overweight, incorrect diet and lack of physical exercise.
