Centre for Pain Medicine and Interventional Pain Therapy

The focus is on the relief of chronic or acute pain. Acute pain is an important defence mechanism of the body that signals wounds and impending lesions. Chronic pain is in most cases a sign of one or more malfunctions of the human body.

Centre for Interventional Pain Therapy

The Schmerzklinik Basel has an Intermediate Care Unit with twelve monitoring beds for the supervision of outpatient therapies. Specialised nursing staff from the fields of anaesthesiology and intensive care medicine administer the respective infusions and monitor the vital parameters according to the doctor's prescription.

Referrals for these measures come both from the outpatient and inpatient sectors of the pain clinic and from colleagues in private practice who do not wish to or are unable to carry out these infusion therapies in their practice. A specialist in anaesthesiology is always available. There is pain that cannot be relieved with physiotherapy, medication or other conservative therapies. Most of the time, these are chronic complaints from the musculoskeletal system after injuries, operations or due to age-related changes. Often, the resulting pain is complicated by the so-called pain memory. Here, the specialists in the Department of Interventional Pain Diagnostics and Therapy help with special treatment methods.

Treatment

If a causal treatment of the chronic pain is no longer possible, interventional pain therapy provides highly effective technological methods for symptomatic pain relief.

  • Targeted infiltrations of vegetative and sensory nerves (floor therapy)
  • Catheter therapies (e.g. for scarring)
  • Targeted current therapies (with pulsed and warm radio frequency) on nerves and intervertebral discs
  • Implantation of electrical spinal cord stimulators or pump systems

Most of the interventions are performed on an outpatient basis, otherwise a stay in the clinic's own ward is planned so that the right measures can be taken immediately in the event of any infusion reactions.
