Retinal diseases: why early diagnosis makes all the difference
Age-related macular degeneration (AMD), diabetic retinopathy and complications associated with high myopia are among the most common retinal diseases in Switzerland. Many of these conditions progress without symptoms in their early stages, which often delays treatment.
Dr Aude Ambresin, an ophthalmologist and head of the Swiss Visio Retina Research Centre, explains why an early diagnosis can help preserve vision for much longer. She also highlights a simple test to incorporate into daily life: the monocular test, which involves covering one eye at a time to detect any loss of vision that might go unnoticed when using both eyes.
The interview also covers recent advances in retinal imaging, anti-VEGF injections and promising avenues for dry AMD, including gene therapy.
