EURETINA 2026: the Swiss Visio research team in Vienna

From 1 to 4 October 2026, Vienna hosted the 26th Congress of the European Society of Retina Specialists (EURETINA). The Swiss Visio Montchoisi research team was well represented at the event, with several generations of doctors in attendance.

Dr Aude Ambresin took part in the congress in several capacities. Invited as a speaker, she demonstrated how artificial intelligence can support the monitoring of geographic atrophy, an advanced form of age-related macular degeneration (AMD). She chaired two scientific sessions and presented two papers: one on the role of AI in evaluating a treatment for geographic atrophy, and the other on the long-term outcomes of a treatment for neovascular AMD. She also spoke at three symposia, notably on the use of AI to aid patient recruitment for clinical trials and on how AI can free up healthcare professionals’ time for more essential tasks.

The next generation was also well represented. Dr Frang, a current fellow, presented a poster on the links between the retina and the choroid in people with diabetes, visualised using wide-field OCT angiography. Dr Bekiroglu, a former fellow, devoted his poster to the microstructure of geographic atrophy lesions observed using adaptive optics. Dr Nicolò Bartolomeo, also a former fellow, presented a study using artificial intelligence to measure the efficacy of a treatment for neovascular AMD.

For Swiss Visio, this congress provided an opportunity to exchange ideas with leading European experts, to remain at the forefront of clinical research and to inspire a passion for research in the next generation of doctors. A big thank you to the entire research centre team for their dedication.
