Parkinson's disease: LSVT BIG therapeutic concept proposed at Clinique Valmont

LSVT BIG® is a therapeutic approach used in physiotherapy and occupational therapy for patients with Parkinson's disease, which emphasises large range of motion (BIG = grand, in French).

This intensive therapy enables Parkinson's patients to assimilate new, large movements on a daily basis. It also helps to improve body perception and control of movement, as well as boosting confidence and personal management.

Objectives and programme

Objectives

LSVT BIG® aims to improve :

  • The amplitude of steps and movements
  • The speed of movements
  • Balance
  • Mobility
  • Manual dexterity in everyday activities
  • Posture

Program

This therapeutic concept is based on an intense rhythm, which follows the following model:

  • 18 therapy sessions
  • 60 minutes per session
  • 4 sessions per week
  • 4 consecutive weeks

As part of this programme, patients perform exercises during sessions with their therapist and independently at home to integrate them into their daily activities.
