Recognising macular degeneration in time
Age-related macular degeneration (AMD), commonly known as senile macular degeneration, is a condition that affects the macula, the central part of the retina responsible for sharp vision and detail. It is a common disease in people over the age of 50 and is one of the leading causes of vision loss in the elderly population.
The first symptoms can be subtle: blurred central vision, distorted lines or the appearance of a dark spot in the centre of the field of vision. These signs are often underestimated or attributed to fatigue, thus delaying diagnosis.
However, early diagnosis is crucial: if detected in time, macular degeneration can be monitored and treated, slowing its progression and preserving visual quality.
We discuss this with Dr Leandro Oliverio, an ophthalmology specialist and deputy director of the Swiss Visio Clinic in Bellinzona, who explains the symptoms, risk factors, prevention and treatment options available today.
