Il Ceresio - Abdomen and pregnancy: when diastasis goes beyond aesthetics
«Abdominal diastasis is a condition that involves the separation of the rectus abdominis muscles along the midline, called the linea alba. When this distance exceeds 2/2.5 centimetres, it is referred to as “diastasis recti”, a very common phenomenon, especially after pregnancy.»
This is how visceral surgeon Dr Francesco Salmoiraghi, who works at the Sant'Anna Clinic in Sorengo and the EOC, begins his explanation. It should not be confused with a hernia: «Unlike a hernia, in diastasis there is no interruption of the muscle fascia: the muscles move apart without breaking, but creating a visible and sometimes uncomfortable change in the abdomen.»
