Dry eye: innovative treatment using intense pulsed light

Intense pulsed light (IPL) is an innovative treatment for skin and eye inflammation.

Originally used in dermatology, this technology has been adapted for use in eye care. In ophthalmology, IPL (Intense Pulsed Light) is now used in the treatment of dry eye syndrome, blepharitis and ocular rosacea. It forms part of a comprehensive approach to managing chronic inflammatory conditions of the ocular surface.

Dry eye is an inflammatory condition of the ocular surface, linked to insufficient tear production or poor tear quality. Although generally benign, dry eye is a condition that can be extremely troublesome for patients and usually requires a relatively long course of treatment.

If left untreated, severe dry eye can lead to a reduced quality of life.

IPL technology is fast, non-invasive and aims to address the root causes of the problem rather than merely relieving symptoms.

Intense pulsed light (IPL) is a treatment for skin inflammation that has been used for years to treat rosacea and following certain cosmetic facial procedures. The development of devices for eye care has enabled the application of IPL in the treatment of rosacea and blepharitis (the general term for inflammation of the eyelids).

An innovative treatment, it is recommended in cases of dysfunction of the Meibomian glands, whose role is to supply an oily component to tears to limit their evaporation and keep the eye moisturised.

IPL therapy is used to stimulate these glands, restore their normal function and reduce inflammation.
