silent thief of sight

Discover the interview with Dr Leandro Oliverio, FMH specialist in ophthalmology

Glaucoma is known as the ‘silent thief of sight’ because vision loss, which begins with peripheral vision, occurs very slowly and insidiously. Often, the damage is noticed too late, which is why it is essential to have regular check-ups to diagnose the disease in time.

Fifty per cent of people with glaucoma worldwide are undiagnosed. A check-up every three years is recommended from the age of 40.

This is why prevention through early screening is essential.

According to Dr Oliverio: ‘All damage caused by glaucoma is irreversible and, once compromised, vision in a portion of the visual field cannot be recovered. However, if the disease is diagnosed early, affecting mainly the periphery, the impact on daily life remains limited. When the damage reaches the central part of the visual field, the consequences become more debilitating.’
