La Turrita - Glaucoma: prevention saves sight
From 9 to 16 March, World Glaucoma Week will shine a spotlight on this eye disease. It is an opportunity to raise awareness and combat the growing prevalence of this condition, which is the second leading cause of irreversible blindness. It deserves a dedicated period each year to highlight this condition and reflect on the importance of early diagnosis and choosing the right course of treatment.
We discussed this with Dr Leandro Oliverio, an ophthalmology specialist at Swiss Visio Bellinzona, who explained: ‘Glaucoma is a group of diseases characterised by chronic and progressive damage to the nerve fibres of the retina that form the optic nerve; in medical terms, it is a progressive optic neuropathy.’
