Settimanale Azione - Diabetes: a growing disease
A healthy lifestyle can help prevent and better manage this condition, which is one of the most common chronic diseases in the world: in Switzerland, 5.3% of adults suffer from it.
Diabetes is one of the most widespread chronic diseases in the world. According to the International Diabetes Federation, in 2024 around 11.1% of adults (1 in 9, aged between 20 and 79) will be living with diabetes, equivalent to around 589 million people. By 2050, this number is expected to rise to around 850 million adults. In addition, more than 4 in 10 people with diabetes are unaware that they have the disease, putting them at greater risk of undiagnosed complications. In Switzerland, the prevalence is lower than the global average, but still significant: in 2024, approximately 5.3% of adults aged 20 to 79 will have diabetes, corresponding to more than 430,000 adults.
