Ticinonews - Amateur soccer: passion, fun, and...40,000 injuries
According to SUVA, the 40,000 injuries per year linked to amateur football result in around 680,000 days of absence from work in Switzerland. This is a situation that can be prevented through fair play and physical fitness. However, according to sports physician Marco Marano, the answer is not a sedentary lifestyle
For some, heading to the pitch to play football is a real passion; for others, it’s just an occasional pastime.
But football can also mean injuries: SUVA records 40,000 such injuries annually in the amateur sector. This figure comes as no surprise to sports medicine specialist Marco Marano, who works at Ars Medica. He explains that the most common football injuries mainly affect the ankle and knee due to ‘a sudden twisting mechanism’.
The most serious injury is a torn anterior cruciate ligament: “a bit of a nightmare for all footballers,” says Marano. This injury can result in periods of inactivity from sport “of up to 12 months, as well as several weeks or months of being unable to work”.
