We all have almost 2 square metres of it, accounting for around 15% of our body weight. We never really think about it, but the skin is our largest organ. It is a physical and biological boundary between us and the world, but also a symbolic one, through which perceptions, relationships and identity pass. Increasingly under the microscope: dermatological societies warn that skin cancers are on the rise, even among the very young.
Whilst one cause may be found in exposure to external agents that have become more aggressive – such as the sun, pollution or chemicals – on the other hand, increased focus on prevention is also contributing positively. Switzerland ranks among the countries with the highest incidence of cases: every year, 3,300 people are diagnosed with melanoma and 25,000 develop other forms of skin cancer.
