Launch of a Pilot Care Pathway Dedicated to Baclofen Pumps Across the Riviera Region

Clinique Valmont is introducing an innovative pilot care pathway dedicated to the management of patients suffering from severe spasticity, in close collaboration with Dr. Simonin, FMH Specialist in Neurosurgery at Clinique de Montchoisi.

The baclofen pump is a medical device that enables the continuous and targeted delivery of baclofen directly into the cerebrospinal fluid, improving spasticity control while minimizing the side effects associated with oral medication.

When is it recommended?

Baclofen pump therapy offers a specialized treatment option for patients whose conventional therapies, particularly botulinum toxin injections, no longer provide satisfactory results.

Who is it for?

This therapy is primarily intended for patients experiencing significant spasticity of the upper and/or lower limbs, particularly as a result of traumatic brain injury, severe multiple sclerosis, paraplegia, or tetraplegia.

Our Care Pathway

Assessment

Before implantation, patients undergo a comprehensive evaluation, either on an outpatient basis or during an inpatient stay at Clinique Valmont. A five-day intrathecal catheter trial is conducted to assess the effectiveness of the treatment.

This assessment phase relies on close collaboration among the rehabilitation team—including physicians, nurses, physiotherapists, and occupational therapists—to establish personalized and measurable therapeutic goals.

Implantation

When the test results are conclusive, the pump is implanted by Dr. Simonin, a neurosurgeon at Clinique de Montchoisi. The pump enables the continuous, targeted delivery of baclofen directly into the cerebrospinal fluid.

Follow-up

Regular follow-up care is then provided, with scheduled reviews every six months to adjust the treatment according to the patient's needs and optimize long-term outcomes.
