Neuromodulation : an innovative approach to treating chronic pain
What is neuromodulation ?
Neuromodulation encompasses a range of techniques designed to modify the activity of the nervous system for therapeutic purposes. It is primarily based on the use of targeted electrical stimulation, delivered directly to specific areas of the nervous system, in order to modulate the transmission of pain signals. Magnetic and chemical stimulation are also used.
These techniques aim to influence the perception of pain by reducing its intensity and improving the patient’s comfort. Neuromodulation represents a major step forward in the management of chronic pain, particularly when it is linked to a dysfunction of the nervous system.
An integrated solution at the Pain Centre
At the Pain Centre at the Clinique de Genolier, neuromodulation forms part of a comprehensive, innovative and multidisciplinary approach to chronic pain.
It is a technique recognised by the medical community, which complements the range of therapeutic solutions offered at the centre, alongside other interventional and medical approaches.
Its integration enables us to offer an effective alternative to conventional treatments when these no longer provide sufficient relief.
Targeted treatments for specific types of pain
Neuromodulation is particularly suitable for patients suffering from neuropathic pain. This type of pain is linked to damage to or a malfunction of the nervous system and can occur in:
- the back,
- the arms,
- the legs.
This pain is often persistent, debilitating and difficult to treat with traditional drug-based approaches.
An alternative when conventional treatments reach their limits
Neuromodulation is generally recommended when chronic pain persists despite optimal medical management.
It is used after so-called conventional treatments, such as medication or certain simple interventional techniques, have failed or proved insufficient. Each case is subject to a thorough assessment to ensure the treatment is appropriate for the patient.
Significant clinical benefits
In appropriately selected patients, and where neuropathic pain has been clearly identified, neuromodulation leads to:
- a significant reduction in pain intensity, of up to approximately 50 per cent in responders,
- a reduction in the use of pain-relieving medication,
- an overall improvement in comfort and well-being.
These results depend on rigorous selection of indications and specialised care.
A multidisciplinary and personalised approach
The Pain Centre at the Clinique de Genolier is based on close collaboration between specialists: pain specialists and anaesthetists, neurologists, neurosurgeons, physiotherapists, psychologists, and others.
Each patient receives a comprehensive assessment and a treatment plan tailored to their individual situation. This multidisciplinary approach enables us to take into account all aspects of pain – medical, functional and psychological – in order to optimise therapeutic outcomes.
A sustainable approach, based on monitoring and support
As well as pain relief, patients undergoing neuromodulation often experience:
- an improvement in their quality of life (measured using objective assessment tools)
- an easier return to activities of daily living (increased walking distance, resumption of a social life, return to work)
- a reduction in the use of pain-relieving medication, particularly anti-inflammatories or certain specific treatments for neuropathic pain.
The ultimate aim is to enable patients to regain a better balance in their daily lives.
A sustainable approach, based on monitoring and support
Neuromodulation can be an effective long-term solution, provided it is integrated into a structured medical care programme and applied to rigorously selected patients.
The success of the treatment depends on close collaboration between the patient, the centre’s teams and the patient’s GP. Regular support enables the treatment plan to be adapted, results to be optimised and a lasting response to the patient’s needs to be guaranteed.
