Review: Public Lecture «When the Back Ages – Degenerative Lumbar Spine Disorders and Their Treatments»
Dr Bertrand Actor and PD Dr Carl Izumi Muroi, specialists in neurosurgery with a focus on spinal surgery, gave the many guests an accessible overview of the causes, diagnosis and treatment of lumbar spine disorders. They explained which non-surgical treatment options are available and which factors are considered when surgery is being evaluated.
The two specialists illustrated the medical concepts particularly clearly using spine models, medical imaging and clinical case examples. A camera transmitted the demonstrations directly onto the large screen, allowing the audience to follow the anatomical changes and treatment approaches in detail. Topics included degenerative changes of the intervertebral discs, herniated discs and narrowing of the spinal canal.
The guests also gained an insight into the modern technical support available in spinal surgery. Using a computer-assisted navigation system, the speakers demonstrated how imaging data can support planning and orientation during certain procedures. The practical demonstration on a spine model made the technology and its application easy to understand.
During the aperitif that followed, guests had the opportunity to raise further questions and speak personally with the two neurosurgeons.
