Review: Public Lecture «Breast Cancer – Beyond Tumour Treatment»
Breast cancer treatment raises many questions that go beyond treating the tumour itself. What role does nutrition play? What can help relieve hot flushes during endocrine therapy? And how can physical symptoms following treatment be alleviated? These were the topics addressed at a public lecture held on 14 October 2026 at Privatklinik Bethanien. Together with Swiss Breast Care, the clinic hosted an informative evening to mark Breast Cancer Awareness Month.
PD Dr. med. Daniela Paepke explored the importance of nutrition in breast cancer care. She discussed the role of nutrition in prevention, during treatment and the risk of malnutrition. Dr. med. Ivrea Florio focused on hot flushes, which can occur as a side effect of endocrine therapy, and explained the treatment options offered by new non-hormonal medications.
Physical symptoms can also continue to affect patients beyond the actual tumour treatment. Physiotherapists Gabriela Stoss and Aïsha Lüke outlined how physiotherapy can help support patients experiencing lymphoedema, scarring and pain.
The lecture highlighted the importance of considering patients' quality of life alongside the treatment of the disease itself. Comprehensive care therefore addresses not only medical needs but also the physical and personal needs of patients during and after therapy.
Privatklinik Bethanien and Swiss Breast Care would like to thank all four speakers for their valuable contributions, as well as everyone who attended for their interest.
