Recovery After MRgFUS

Recovery after an MRI‑guided focused ultrasound (MRgFUS) procedure is one of the aspects that draws patients to this therapy. In this video, Dr. Gallay discusses the recovery process, offering practical insights into what patients can expect in the short and long term after treatment.

Immediate Post‑Treatment Phase

Once the MRgFUS procedure is complete, patients are escorted to a recovery area where vital signs are monitored. Because MRgFUS is incision‑free, there is no surgical wound care needed; scalp fixation points typically leave only minor marks.

Most people are up and moving within a few hours and can either go home the same day or stay overnight for observation depending on individual clinical evaluation.

Short‑Term Recovery (Days to Weeks)

In the days following treatment in Bern or Ostermundigen, patients may experience subtle sensations like mild headache or transient fatigue. Encouragingly, tremor improvement is often noticeable within a short period after treatment.

Follow‑up appointments typically include clinical assessments and MRI checks at intervals such as one month, three months, and annually to document outcomes and monitor progress.

Long‑Term Results and Functional Recovery

For many patients treated for tremor or movement disorders, the clinical benefits of MRgFUS are sustained, with improved motor function and quality of life reported months after treatment. Regular follow‑ups help track durability of symptom improvement.

Recovery after MRgFUS is generally quick and well‑tolerated. With no surgical incisions, patients in Switzerland often return to daily routines rapidly, making MRgFUS a compelling therapeutic choice for eligible candidates.
