Treatment for AMD: what’s available today to preserve your sight

There is as yet no complete cure for AMD, but effective treatments are now available to slow its progression and preserve vision. The key is early diagnosis and regular monitoring.

For wet AMD: anti-VEGF injections

The exudative form of AMD can be treated effectively with intravitreal injections of anti-VEGF drugs. These injections, administered directly into the eye by a specialist ophthalmologist, block the growth of abnormal blood vessels and prevent the build-up of fluid beneath the retina. When administered at regular intervals, they can, in many cases, stabilise — or even improve — vision.

For dry AMD: promising advances

For a long time, no treatment was available for the atrophic form. Today, therapies are available to slow the progression of the disease, and research is making great strides. This is precisely one of the missions of the Swiss Visio Retina Research Centre: to contribute to the development of new therapeutic approaches for patients with dry AMD.

Prevention: an underestimated factor

In addition to medical treatment, certain everyday habits can reduce the risk of the condition progressing:

  • Give up smoking
  • Eat a diet rich in green vegetables, fruit and oily fish (omega-3)
  • Take vitamin and antioxidant supplements if recommended by your doctor
  • Wear sunglasses to limit exposure to UV rays

Check regularly – the most important decision

The earlier AMD is detected and treated, the better the visual prognosis. An annual check-up with an ophthalmologist is recommended from the age of 50.
