Having the words ready in your mind but stuck on your lips. This happened to Jessica: within twenty-four hours, she had three strokes and lost the ability to speak. «I understood everything, but I couldn't express myself. I was only able to say a few words at most, and I often said yes when I actually meant no».
She is one of many people who, after a stroke, found themselves dealing with aphasia, the inability to express themselves through speech or writing or to understand the meaning of words spoken or written by others. When we meet Jessica, she is smiling and able to express herself clearly, albeit slowly, as she searches for words and processes her thoughts. She tells us about what happened to her four years ago, her journey to recovery, marked by difficulties and determination, and how her life has changed. She was working as a painter when she suffered a stroke; now she can no longer work, partly because of hemiplegia, paralysis affecting the right side of her body, a disorder that frequently occurs alongside aphasia after a stroke.
