«Breast cancer is a disease characterised by the uncontrolled growth of abnormal cells in breast tissue.
It originates in the ducts or glands that produce milk and, if not diagnosed and treated in time, can spread to nearby tissues or other parts of the body.» This is how Dr Damir De Monaco, breast surgeon at the Ticino Breast Centre, begins his explanation, emphasising how early diagnosis and advances in research have significantly increased the chances of treatment and survival.
In Ticino, breast cancer affects about one in eight women: «It accounts for 32% of all malignant tumours, followed by colon cancer (11%) and lung cancer (7%), and is also the leading cause of cancer death in women.»
