5 May: International Midwives' Day
To mark International Midwives' Day, we spoke to Doro Riehle, an experienced midwife in our maternity ward. She gives us fascinating insights into her work, her experiences and her great passion for this special profession.
How long have you been working at the Bethanien Private Clinic?
I have been working at the Bethanien Private Clinic for more than ten years. This time has been invaluable to me, as I work in a supportive environment and can pursue my calling as a midwife with heart and soul. I am delighted to be part of this team.
How many births have you attended?
By June last year, I had already attended over 3,000 births. It was an unforgettable moment to reach this number, and I look forward every day to accompanying women on this special journey.
Which birth has stayed with you the most and why?
For me, every birth is magical and unique. I couldn't single out one birth, because every moment when a child sees the light of day is incomparable and beautiful.
Would you give birth at the Bethanien Private Clinic yourself and why?
The Bethanien Private Clinic is a very special place for me because we are a small, family-run department and offer our women almost one-to-one care. This special atmosphere makes the place unique. Even though I am no longer of childbearing age myself, I would choose the Bethanien Private Clinic anytime – as would many of my colleagues.
How long does a birth take on average?
For me, the duration of a birth cannot be measured in a fixed time frame. Every birth takes as long as the child needs to come into the world. As a rule, a first birth takes between ten and fifteen hours, while subsequent births are often shorter and more conscious experiences. Ultimately, the time frame is less important because every birth is a unique experience.
What is your favourite way to deliver a baby?
I don't have a preferred way to deliver a baby. The most important thing is that the woman feels comfortable and that the situation allows her to decide what is best for her and her baby. Whether in water, standing, sitting or lying down – we follow the woman's wishes as long as the baby is doing well. A woman's body usually knows best what is most natural for her.
What do you like best about your job?
What I like best about my job is accompanying women during one of the most important moments of their lives and seeing their strength and joy. Despite all the challenges, long shifts and exhausting days, this work still fills me with great joy. If I had to choose my profession again today, I would choose it without hesitation, because it is exactly what I wanted to do in life and I feel completely fulfilled in my job.
We would like to thank Doro Riehle for this fascinating insight into the maternity ward at the Bethanien Private Clinic and for her valuable work as a midwife.
