Full body check-up at the start of the year – why prevention is important at any age

A conversation with Prof. Dr. Dr. Christian Templin, cardiologist and internist at the Privatklinik Bethanien in Zurich.

Why is a full-body check-up a good idea at the start of the year?

«The beginning of the year is an ideal time to consciously focus on your health. Many people resolve to take better care of themselves – a check-up provides a reliable basis for this. This is particularly important because many diseases are completely symptom-free in their early stages. A check-up helps to identify risks before they lead to symptoms. This provides reassurance and enables targeted lifestyle adjustments.»

What examinations are included in a check-up at your practice in Zurich?

Our check-up programme is comprehensive and always tailored to the individual. It includes a detailed medical history, laboratory analyses, ECG, stress ECG, modern cardiac ultrasound examinations, vascular diagnostics, ultrasound of the abdomen and thyroid gland, and a lung function test. If necessary, we supplement the check-up with a cardiac CT scan or whole-body MRI.

«It is important to me that every patient receives a tailor-made profile based on their age, lifestyle, symptoms and personal goals.»

For whom is a check-up particularly recommended?

A check-up is worthwhile for every adult – regardless of age. Prevention cannot start early enough. Especially in younger people, we often find risk factors that they themselves are unaware of: elevated blood lipids, changes in blood pressure, stress markers or early signs of metabolic changes. In addition, there are modern cardiovascular risk markers in the blood that we can determine.

Even if there are no symptoms yet, such early warning signs can be crucial. This is because most diseases develop over many years. The earlier they are detected, the better they can be counteracted.

How does a check-up work at your practice and how long does it take?

A complete check-up usually takes between two and five hours. Patients undergo various examinations, which we coordinate closely in terms of space – without wasting time and in a calm, discreet atmosphere.

In the subsequent final consultation, we analyse all the findings together. It is important to me to explain the connections in an understandable way. Each patient receives a personal health plan that contains specific recommendations for prevention.

What typical diseases can be detected early through a check-up?

Above all, we detect early signs of cardiovascular disease, diabetes and other metabolic disorders, functional disorders of the thyroid, liver and kidneys, and vascular changes. Modern diagnostics help us to identify risks before they lead to serious problems.

What is particularly important to me is that even if all values are within the normal range, many patients learn a lot about their bodies. We often discover risk factors that can be positively influenced by small changes – more exercise, better sleep, dietary adjustments. That is real prevention.

How can patients book an appointment for a full body check-up?

Making an appointment is very straightforward. Patients can contact our check-up team via the Bethanien Private Clinic website, by telephone or by email.

We advise you in advance on the appropriate modules and clarify any open questions. Our goal is to make preventive care accessible and understandable for everyone.
