A conversation with Prof. Dr. Dr. Christian Templin, cardiologist and internist at the Privatklinik Bethanien in Zurich.
«The beginning of the year is an ideal time to consciously focus on your health. Many people resolve to take better care of themselves – a check-up provides a reliable basis for this. This is particularly important because many diseases are completely symptom-free in their early stages. A check-up helps to identify risks before they lead to symptoms. This provides reassurance and enables targeted lifestyle adjustments.»
A check-up is worthwhile for every adult – regardless of age. Prevention cannot start early enough. Especially in younger people, we often find risk factors that they themselves are unaware of: elevated blood lipids, changes in blood pressure, stress markers or early signs of metabolic changes. In addition, there are modern cardiovascular risk markers in the blood that we can determine.
Even if there are no symptoms yet, such early warning signs can be crucial. This is because most diseases develop over many years. The earlier they are detected, the better they can be counteracted.
Above all, we detect early signs of cardiovascular disease, diabetes and other metabolic disorders, functional disorders of the thyroid, liver and kidneys, and vascular changes. Modern diagnostics help us to identify risks before they lead to serious problems.
What is particularly important to me is that even if all values are within the normal range, many patients learn a lot about their bodies. We often discover risk factors that can be positively influenced by small changes – more exercise, better sleep, dietary adjustments. That is real prevention.
