Although little known, the lymphatic system plays a decisive role in the immune system and communicates with the blood system by draining fluids that accumulate in the subcutaneous tissues. Approximately 10% of the fluid that irrigates the tissues does not return to the heart through the veins, but through the lymphatic system, which provides essential drainage to support the cardiovascular system. Unfortunately, we only realise how important this system is when it is compromised. We discuss lymphatic diseases (lymphoedema and lipoedema) with Dr Corrado Campisi, a specialist in plastic and reconstructive surgery who, since last November, has been coordinating the multidisciplinary centre specialising in the diagnosis and treatment of lymphatic diseases at the Clinica Sant'Anna in Sorengo.
