Lymphedema and lipedema at the center of a meeting organized by the Clinica Sant'Anna
It often affects older people, and in Ticino, where the average age continues to rise, the numbers are likely to increase in the future. This makes prevention – which in this case mainly involves early diagnosis – all the more important. So-called “elephant limbs” are the result of two disorders: lipedema, an accumulation of subcutaneous fat accompanied by inflammation and pain, and lymphedema, which consists of a build-up of lymph caused by an abnormality in the lymphatic system. The latter is the focus of an international awareness day on March 6, when the Sant'Anna Clinic is organizing a free public conference (6 p.m.) open to all.
