Settimanale Azione - When Sports Come to a Halt Due to Injury

In recent years, participation in sports in Switzerland has grown significantly, but so has the number of accidents. A sports orthopedist and a physical therapist talk to us about prevention, diagnosis, and recovery

«For me, cycling was above all about freedom. I rode several times a week, between training sessions and leisure rides. Then, during a descent on a road I knew well, a sudden loss of control caused me to crash violently onto the asphalt. The pain in my shoulder and knee was immediate, and I realized right away that this wasn’t just a minor bump. After examinations, I was diagnosed with an injury that required a period of rest and rehabilitation. The hardest part wasn’t just the physical pain, but accepting that I had to stop. Over time, however, I realized how important prevention, proper training, and specialist-guided recovery are. Today I’m gradually getting back in the saddle, with greater awareness and attention to my body.»

This is the story of Mario, an amateur cyclist who turned an accident into an opportunity to learn to listen to himself and come back stronger. We’ve shared his story to remind everyone, on the occasion of World Physical Activity Day promoted by the WHO on April 6, that it’s important to practice sports safely and mindfully, paying proper attention to injury prevention.
