Patient Safety Week 2026

17 September marks the WHO’s World Patient Safety Day. Swiss Medical Network is marking the occasion with a themed week running from 14 to 18 September 2026. Five articles explain what patient safety actually means in the context of managing non-communicable diseases (NCDs). Four interviews give a voice to healthcare professionals and a patient.

Day 1 – Prevention

Prevention only becomes patient safety when risks are not merely identified, but jointly assessed, documented and reliably monitored.

Day 2 – Support for people with NCDs

2.7 million people in Switzerland are living with a chronic condition. Six key elements ensure they receive the right support, from setting shared goals to regular medication checks.

Tag 3 – Patient Empowerment

Treatment is a team effort: How patients move from being recipients to becoming active partners in their own treatment.

Day 4 – Handover

A handover is only secure when nothing is left to chance. Five principles ensure secure handovers at the start and end of a shift.

Day 5 – Integrated Care (VIVA)

A shared patient record, coordinated treatment goals and a capitation-based payment model make healthcare safer and more effective.
