What advice would you give to someone who has just been diagnosed with a chronic condition?

«A diagnosis of a chronic condition changes a lot of things, but it doesn’t define the person.

My most important piece of advice is this: take the time to understand the condition. Ask questions. Seek to engage with your healthcare team. Nobody is expected to know everything from the start or to get to grips with everything straight away.

Focus first on the aspects you can influence and set realistic goals with your healthcare team.

Scientific studies show that people who understand their condition and take an active part in their treatment often develop greater self-confidence, peace of mind and a better quality of life.

Every little bit of progress counts. Self-management isn’t about perfection, but about finding your own way to live as well as possible with the condition.»
